Working with Superhighways was "very supportive, very friendly, very 'colleague-like', we created that kind of environment working together."
Reconnection is a charity aiding East African refugees and migrants to overcome conflict and poverty. Despite reaching safety, they face ongoing challenges.
Reconnection's goal is to combat the subtle discrimination affecting their mental health and integration, promoting a more inclusive society.
Meet Asmerom
Asmerom is one of three Trustees at Reconnection and he is involved in all of their IT activities including looking after their email, website and devices.
The digital challenge
Asmerom says "After the pandemic we were working with many different organisations for support and when we first talked to Superhighways it was mostly about data, how do you collect data, how do you process it, how do you present it to stakeholders, so we attended these training sessions and learnt that Superhighways could help us in other areas."
After the pandemic, our whole teams and our clients were dependent on this new technology, working and collaborating through Zoom and Teams etc. Our beneficiaries and clients, they sometimes didn't have this software, they didn't have the devices to run them, and they lacked the IT skills as well, so it was a struggle.
Reconnection had a website, but in common with many charities, it had been developed by someone outside the organisation who was no longer available, making updating the website and keeping it up-to-date difficult.
When you rely on other people to do it for you don't control it, if you want to update something, if you want to change something, you call them and they are not available, so that was frustrating.
Asmeron had a number of old laptops and tablets that were no longer working
Superhighways organised these Bring Your Tech Days, we attended twice with the computers, about 4 computers in total, and they managed to rectify them, it was fantastic.
Reconnection were also paying for an email service and Office software
When we transferred the website the emails had to be transferred as well, so that was to Outlook, it's seemed very technical to transfer, the language I learned, honestly, so we migrated the emails in just a couple of meetings I think, with Paul's help.
How Superhighways helped
Asmerom joined Superhighways' cohort of trainees for ‘Build my community website in 7 weeks’ course in October 2023.
He then quickly built a website himself with skills learned during the 7-week training programme, and has trained trustees and volunteers at Reconnection to maintain and update the website
Bring your own Tech Days
Asmerom brought a total of 4 older laptops to Superhighway's Bring Your Own Tech days.
They were all restored to working order, fully updated and are now being used within the charity.
Saving software fees and migrating emails
At one of the Bring Your Own Tech days Superhighways helped Asmerom apply for donated versions of Microsoft 365 software.
They then helped Asmerom migrate his emails from the existing service into Outlook.
The results
After building the new website and putting it live, Asmerom has trained others in the organisation how to maintain and update it.
Reconnection's website is now under their control and kept up to date.
Asmerom has even added a website link to his Outlook calendar so that clients can book advice sessions with him online.
Yes, so it's like train the trainer: I have been training others in the team, and now we control the website, so now everyone understands that it's shared work, we train them and then they control, they manage, they update it, but the training was done in-house by ourselves
Reconnection are now saving the fees they were paying for website/email hosting and Microsoft Office software and can provide 4 additional laptops for their clients use.
Anytime you contact them they will get straight back to you. They are always happy to help, no question is too big or too small, they're really good
Visit Reconnection's website to see the fruits of Asmeron's labour.
