This is a short list of some of the best Digital Inclusion resources provided by Superhighways and other organisations (local & national). Once someone has basic digital skills then they have access to many different tools, training & resources across the internet.
Data and devices
Millions of people are overpaying for their mobile data and the 4 primary mobile networks (EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three) often don’t provide the best value for money.
In 2025 someone with low usage (up to 5GB mobile data) shouldn’t be paying any more than £5 a month and a moderate to heavy user (20-50GB) should be paying under £10 too.
Also, many cheap deals don’t require a long-term contract but instead use 30 day rolling contracts.
Several price comparison sites exist so it’s worth shopping around. Money Saving Expert’s SIM comparison tool is a good place to start.
4 million people across the country could benefit from long term low-cost broadband deals, known collectively as social tariffs, but awareness is low, and it can be a bit tricky to move onto one.
In 2025 these deals are typically priced between £15-£20 and most broadband providers have a social tariff, but they all have different names.
Ofcom has a good general page about social tariffs and Money Saving Expert’s broadband comparison tool also includes social tariffs.
Superhighways sometimes have devices that we can gift to people in need.
They can be laptops that aren’t needed by local organisations or devices we apply for via schemes like the National Device Bank and through Computer’s 4 Charity (phones, tablets, computers).
Please do get in touch and even if we don’t currently have devices available, we can notify you when the situation changes.
Superhighways is part of the National Data Bank and Charities Connected schemes which means we get access to free SIM cards from Vodafone, O2 and Three to provide to local residents.
These cards come with calls, texts and data or data only already to go.
Furthermore, we can help people to move their number from one SIM card to another or make use of the fact that many newer phones have two SIM card slots.
Skills
Learn My Way is a fantastic free website with short lessons on everything from using a touchscreen to mobile banking and from using the NHS app to spotting scams. Once you’ve registered then you can work at your own pace, pick up where you left off and repeat lessons too. The website works well on any device, so we find that some people get a real benefit from being able to do it on the bus, etc.
Kingston Adult Education run in person courses that go into detail on a range of topics for beginners and more intermediate learners.
Training information is freely available from lots of different sources so it’s worth exploring.
Here are links to some of the main tech player’s training offers:
- Microsoft Learn
- WhatsApp help
- Google: Free digital skills training (bit more career and business focused)
- Apple support
- Zoom support
There are many useful and good resources on online safety, avoiding scams and general good practice.
However, some assume a decent level of existing understanding of how the internet works, jargon, etc.
Therefore, a good place to start is the UK Safer Internet Centre that is targeted at helping children and young people stay safe online, but the tips are good for everyone.
YouTube, the world’s largest online video platform, has some great resources on it.
As with YouTube in general as well as excellent professional content, and some great amateur or community videos, there is a decent amount of old, incorrect or unhelpful content. We recommend spending a bit of time watching videos from channels with a decent number of subscribers and then if you find one that works for you they’ll often have a lot of different videos and guides that you can access.
Support
AbilityNet is a leading national charity that supports older people and disabled people of any age. One of their great tools is My Computer My Way which provides simple ‘how to’ guides to making our devices more accessible and easier to use. Things like making the font size larger to using voice to text tools, etc. You can search and filter by either the device, adjustment or condition.
Superhighways have supported many local digital champions over the years. Some work in the borough, some are volunteers, and all are passionate about helping other people to make the most of the online world. We are always open to opportunities to connect the digital champions with local organisations so do please get in contact to tell us a bit more about what you are up to and the help you might need.
All the libraries across the borough provide access to devices that library card holders can use for free, plus there is access to free Wi-Fi too.
