Case study written by Tsigereda Tekletsadik from Voluntary Action Islington for Superhighways
When I joined Voluntary Action Islington as a Development Manager supporting VCS organisations, Superhighways quickly became one of the most valuable sources of support in my role.
First impressions and networking
One of the first network meetings I attended was organised by Superhighways, and it had an immediate positive effect.
The sessions were well structured with a clear agenda, which encouraged everyone to contribute.
Being alongside colleagues from a wide range of VCS organisations gave us the chance to share good practice, discuss the challenges we all face and learn from one another’s experiences.
Training and resources
Superhighways’ training opportunities have also been very important for my development.
Early on, I attended Canva and Excel training, which provided a strong foundation for the practical aspects of my work.
These sessions were accessible, hands-on and directly relevant to the tasks I needed to complete day to day.
The resources shared, both by Superhighways and by peers at the network meetings, have been extremely useful as I support capacity building for micro to medium-sized organisations.
The tools, guidance and examples I have received have strengthened my confidence and improved the quality of support I can offer across the borough.
VCSS Camp experience
Attending the in-person VCSS Camp 11 has also been a major benefit.
The camp provides space to explore a range of topics, reflect on common challenges in the sector and consider possible solutions together.
Meeting organisations that are already delivering work I hope to introduce in my own borough has helped me avoid starting from the beginning.
Each time I attend, I gain new knowledge, practical ideas and valuable connections. This shared experience has allowed me to build on what already works.
In summary
Superhighways has had a significant impact on my professional development and on the support I provide to local VCS organisations.
Their training, networking opportunities and commitment to collaborative learning have helped me grow quickly in my role, and I am able to pass this learning directly on to the organisations I work with.
