Recommended specifications - most charity users

  1. Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (important, do not buy Windows 11 Home)
  2. Processor: Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 (or higher)
    • Minimum Processor Generation: 13th generation Intel Core or AMD Ryzen 7500 or 8500
  3. RAM: 16GB (recommended)
  4. Storage: 256GB SSD (minimum), 512GB SSD (recommended)
  5. Display: 14-inch Full HD (1920x1080) or larger
  6. Graphics: Integrated graphics (sufficient for most productivity tasks)
  7. Battery Life: Minimum 8 hours
  8. Connectivity: Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C ports

Higher spec for demanding applications, eg. intensive on-board Video editing

  1. Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (important, do not buy Windows 11 home)
  2. Processor: Intel Core i7 13000, 14000 or Intel Core Ultra 7 or AMD Ryzen 7 7700 or 8700
  3. RAM: 32GB (especially if not upgradable, i.e. soldered to motherboard)
  4. Storage: 512GB SSD
  5. Display: 14-inch Full HD (1920x1080) or larger
  6. Graphics: Integrated graphics (sufficient for most productivity tasks)
  7. Battery Life: Minimum 8 hours
  8. Connectivity: Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C ports

March 2025 - typical price range for a laptop with the above specification is £1,000 - £1,400.

 

Explanation of specifications

  • Processor: A mid-range processor like the Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 ensures smooth performance for multitasking and running multiple applications simultaneously. For older machines, the minimum supported processor generation for Windows 11 is the 11th generation Intel Core or AMD Ryzen 3000 series.
  • RAM: 16GB is highly recommended for better performance, especially when using multiple productivity applications.  If you do buy a machine with only 8GB RAM, ensure that more RAM can easily be fitted.
  • Storage: An SSD (Solid State Drive) is preferred over an HDD (Hard Disk Drive) due to its faster read/write speeds, which significantly improve system responsiveness. A minimum of 256GB is necessary to store essential applications and files, while 512GB provides more room for growth.

  • Windows 11 Pro: This version of Windows is required for advanced security features (encrypting the hard-drive) and management capabilities, which are essential for integrating with a Microsoft 365 tenant.  Do not buy a laptop with Windows 11 Home for use in a charity or business environment.
